Fact or Fiction?

More and more technology is being introduced to young children inside and outside of school. The question and I think problem is there is so much out there for children to research but it is really accurate? Kids can access the internet from pretty much anywhere now. No question goes unanswer thanks to Google, but are they really learning and researching information that contains valid information or just someone elses perception of a topic? This blog is going to look deeper into which websites are really valid and what is fiction as well as finding accurate information that will help parents and children know how to find  what they are looking for because when using the Internet sometimes, It's Not What You Think It Is...

  1. Nikki! This is a great idea! Even high schoolers struggle with determining if a webpage is "fact" or "fiction." Starting something as meaningful as this at the elementary level is totally necessary. And, it is aligned with the Common Core state standards!

  2. I agree. Our students are digitial natives in the sense that they know how to use the technology. What they don't know is how to evaluate the findings once they have used the technology. It is like when we give them calculators in math. The calculator is only as smart as its operator. Students have to have some sense of number in order to evaluate whether or not the calculations done on the calculator make sense to solve the problem. It is the whole idea of "making sense" that our digital natives struggle with because the information is so easy to get. We, as teachers, need to make sure that we not only teach how to USE (if that is even needed), but HOW to use and to evaluate the results.

  3. This is a wonderful point! A point I ponder every time I look at what people post on Facebook. All the propaganda against (and for) President Obama. Billion dollar trips while he cuts military perks. Umm... All the posts about 'I need a million likes for a new kidney'. People think these are true, no matter how many times people tell them it is a phishing scheme. Even adults have a difficult time deciphering what is true and what is not. How can we expect impressionable children to make intelligent decisions about what is fact and what is fiction?
